Rotogravure Printing

The Lowest Cost per Bag, at Real Volume

Rotogravure prints from engraved copper cylinders. The setup is a genuine investment, and once it is paid for nothing beats it on unit price, color consistency, or depth across a very large run.

  • Best unit cost at high volume
  • Deep, repeatable color
  • Ideal for proven, high-reorder products

How Rotogravure Works

Every color in your design is engraved into its own copper cylinder. Those cylinders pick up ink, lay it onto the film, and repeat thousands of times an hour with almost no variation. The engraving is what makes gravure expensive to begin and excellent once it is running. That cost does not change whether you print ten thousand bags or a million, which is the whole economic argument: the more bags you run from one design, the less the setup costs you per bag.

When Gravure Is the Right Call

The number that decides it is not your total order. It is your run size per design, because every design needs its own cylinders.

  • High volume per SKUOne design, ordered in the tens of thousands and reordered.
  • Settled artworkThe design is final. Changing it means engraving again.
  • Color-critical brandsWhere an exact brand color must match on every run.
  • Long-term staplesThe flagship product that has sold for years.

If that is not you yet, digital printing is almost certainly better economics today.

Gravure vs Digital, Honestly

Two good methods with different break-even points. Neither is better in the abstract.

Setup Cost

Gravure pays for engraved cylinders up front, per design. Digital has no plate step at all.

Unit Cost

Gravure wins clearly at volume, digital wins clearly below it. Where they cross depends on your run size per design.

Flexibility

Digital lets you change artwork between runs at no cost. With gravure, a change means re-engraving.

Lead Time

Engraving adds time at the start. Digital skips it, so first delivery comes sooner.

Most brands start digital and graduate one or two best sellers to gravure once the volume is real. Running both is normal. Our post on digital versus rotogravure runs the numbers.
